베스트셀러 작가 Steven Johnson UCO에 오다.

학기중에 써 둔 글을 바빠서 못 올리다가 지금 올립니다.

강의가 엄청 재미있고 친절하신 교수님께서 학생들에게 베스트셀러 작가가 우리 대학교인 UCO를 방문한다고 그분의 프리젠테이션을 듣고 간단한 메모를 하면 좋겠다고 권해주셔서 많은 동료학생들과 함께 가서 직관을 했습니다.

제가 책 읽는 것은 엄청 좋아해도 게으른 몸이라... 작가 설명회 같은데를 거의 안 가봤는데요. 그래도 뉴욕타임즈 베스트셀러 작가인 Steven Johnson 아저씨가  UCO 학생회관인 Nigh University Center에 오셔서 '창조적인 생각은 어디서 오는가'에 대해서 1시간 동안 강연하고 질의응답하고 나머지 1시간은 아래층 Barns and Noble에서 책 서명회를 했습니다.

제가 엄청 오래 전에 홍콩 디즈니랜드에서 미키마우스, 도널드 덕 등 진짜 디즈니 캐릭터를 보고 진짜 Authentic한 것들을 보면 감동이 다르구나, 하고 느꼈던 것과 비슷한 것을 느꼈습니다. 내용은 아래 소개한 책을 (아마 한국어로도 번역돼 있을텐데) 읽어보시면 될 것 같습니다. 저는 안 읽은 것 같은데 내용 중 많은 부분은 '거의 모든 것의 역사'에서도 언급돼 있는 것 같아서 이해에 무리는 없었습니다. 

결론은 창의력은 connected mind 에서 나오기 때문에 가급적 많이 공개하고 서로 토론하고 정보를 주고받으라는 것이었습니다. 100% 공감하고요. 학생들은 그런 의미에서 최소한 다른 나라에 가서 공부해 보는 과정이 꼭 필요하지 않나 싶습니다. 미국만이 아니라 다른 어떠 나라라도 괜찮지 않을까 하는 그런 생각을 가져봅니다.

그럼 시험기간이 1달 남았고 전력투구해야 해서... 한 달 후에 글로 다시 찾아뵙겠습니다.

아래 글은 제 감상평인데요... 보통 때는 꼭 학내 작문센터에 가서 검정을 받는데요. 이번학기는 너무 시간이 없어서 원어민 검정을 못받았습니다. 일단 그냥 올려봅니다. ^^ 문법적 실수는 눈감아 주세요.

The author mentioned three main things in innovation or incurring creative ideas. 

First, like the coffee house in the 17th century England, diversity should come first. He said that great ideas did not come from a lonely individual or lab. Ideas should shuffle with others. 

Second, he insisted that great thought needs a brewing period called ‘the slow hunch.’ 

Finally, on the site of UCO Nigh center that day, he said there much be fun in creative activities or thoughts going around. 

I graduated MBA program from UCO last semester. There I used to be one of the two international students in many classes. After the first classes of Excel, Python, Tableau, and Regression programs this semester in MSBA, I called my former MBA classmates to say "Hey, You wouldn't believe what I have in this class. We have a bunch of diversity in students’ nationality." That is a good sign in incurring creativity. 

Recently due to the difficulties of other classes, the class video taken by students started to circulate, and the friendship/comraderies evolved regardless of students’ nationalities. Of course, we need a hunch time to master all the learned or crammed things. However, I think it’s important to keep finding fun in our programs in the long run. I guess programming like Python has a great future and possibility for all of us only if we keep digging it as long as we can. Fun seeking activities even in coding is necessary for us to succeed in the future business world. That is the only way we can continue creating more efficient coding lines and incur more creativity with each other. 

I also saw the TED video after attending NIGH center presentation. The last saying in the TED speech is a takeaway for me. “That is how innovation happens. Chance favors the connected mind.”
